今年で生誕200年を迎えるシューマンは、同い年のショパンの影に隠れて、日本での扱われ方はかなり地味である。書店に行っても、ショパン関係の本が何冊も平積みされているのに対し、シューマンの本は最近までほとんど見当たらなかった。不当な処遇に憤りを感じていたファンは私一人ではあるまい。しかしこのほど、こうした鬱憤をすべて吹き飛ばすような快著が現れた。奥泉光氏の小説『シューマンの指』（講談社）である。

冒頭からしてショッキングである。物語の語り手である「私」は、ドイツに留学中の友人から手紙を受け取るが、それによるとかつての天才ピアニスト長嶺修人(ながみね・まさと)――不幸な事故がもとで右手中指の第二関節から先を失った――の演奏を聴いたというのである。失ったはずの指はどうなったのか？　読者はこの喪失された指の「痛み」と、どのようにそれを蘇生させたのかという疑問を抱きながら本書の頁をめくることになる。因みに右手の中指は、シューマンも故障をしてピアニストを断念した因縁の指でもある。

このあと、「私」による回想が綴られ、修人との出会いと交流が描かれる。長嶺修人は、その名前からも想像できるように――修(＝シュー)、人(＝マン)――、現代におけるシューマンマニア、いやシューマンの生き写しである。天才ピアニストであるだけではなく、美少年かつ頭脳明晰とくれば、輝かしいスターのように思われるが、彼の心には闇の部分がある。死と狂気が潜んだ闇が。そして修人はまるで分身であるかのように、心のどこかで「私」と繋がっている。彼は「私」の通う普通科の高校に入学し、音楽大学を目指して猛勉強中の「私」の前に現れて軽蔑とも激励ともつかぬ謎めいた言葉を吐く。しかし彼の演奏を聴く機会はなかなかめぐってこない。たった三回を除いて。その三回の体験が、ひとつひとつ精密に、印象的に描写される。

随所にちりばめられた奥泉氏のシューマン論は、まさに堂々としたもので、主なピアノ曲の解説はこれだけ取り上げても十分読むに値する。氏はおそらく古くからのシューマンファンであり、各曲を繰り返し聴き、成立背景から曲の構成、過去の演奏の甲乙に至るまで知悉しているように思われる。巻末にあげられている文献は私も読んでいたが、それらを踏まえつつ、安易な引用はなく、自分の言葉で咀嚼して曲を理解しているところに好感を覚えた。例えば、修人はこう述べる。

「シューマンの曲はどれもそうだけど、一つの曲の後ろ、というか、陰になった見えないところで、別の違う曲がずっと続いているような感じがするんだよね。聴こえていないポリフォニーというのかな。音楽を織物に譬えるとしたら、普段は縒り合わさった糸が全部見えている。なのにシューマンは違うんだ。隠れて見えない糸が何本もあって、それがほんのたまに姿を見せる。湖に魚がいて、いつもは深いところを泳いでいるんだけど、夕暮れの決まった時間だけ水面に出てきて、背鰭が湖に波紋を作り出す、というような感じ。そういうふうにシューマンは作っているんだよ」「シューマンのフモールは、ちょっと冗談っぽいんだけど、すごく真面目なんだ。真剣にふざけている。一見すると楽しかったり、やさしかったりするんだけど、すごくひりひりする。火傷したみたいに」「シューマンはね、突然はじまるんだ。ずっと続いている音楽が急に聴こえてきたみたいにね。たとえば野原があったとして、シューマンの音楽は見渡す限りの、地平線の果てにまで広がっている。そのほんの一部分を、シューマンは切り取ってみせる。だから実際に聴こえてくる音楽は、全体の一部分にすぎないんだ」

私が感心したのは、引用したそれぞれの言葉の後半にある比喩である。このような独自の感性に裏打ちされたシューマンの世界が小説を豊饒にし、また筋の展開や人物の造形もシューマニスティックな意匠がこらされている。例えば、「私」と最初に手紙をよこした友人の鹿内堅一郎、長嶺修人はダヴィッド同盟を結成し、同人雑誌を刊行、ノートにめいめいがシューマンや最近聴いた音楽について感想を書き連ねてゆく。

登場するピアニストも虚実入り混じっており――コルトー、アルゲリッチ、ケンプ、ポリーニ、グールド、安川加寿子ら――、音楽愛好家の好奇心をそそる。修人の母である藤田玲子は、架空の人物であるが、コンサートの途中手指の麻痺で演奏ができなくなり引退したその不幸な経歴は、明らかに田中希代子をモデルにしている。他にも登場する人物の中に、複数の実在する人物が溶け込んでいるような気がする。また、ピアノ界の内幕、ピアノ奏法に関する的確な記述は、その筋の読者にもそうでない読者にも興味惹かれるものがある。

本書は一口でいえばシューマンへの愛の告白であり、またシューマン的狂気の世界が、きわめてアクチュアルな――必ずしも肯定的な意味ではないが――意味をもっていることを雄弁に物語っている。思うに、シューマンほど現代的意義の高い作曲家は他に見当たらないのではないか(高橋悠治、吉田秀和、ロラン・バルト、ミシェル・シュネデール、そしておびただしい数の精神病理学考察を参照)。筆者ははっきりそう語っているわけではないが、クラシック音楽ファンは、シューマンを聴くものとそうでない者とに分類されることが随所に暗示されている。そしてこちらの方ははっきりと語っているが、ピアニストもシューマンを弾く人とそうでない人とに分類されるのである。したがってグレン・グールドはシューマンを弾かないという理由だけで一刀両断に切り捨てられ、ショパンですら「センスはちょっといいが、ただそれだけの、パリに出てちやほやされた田吾作だ」とレッテルを貼られてしまう。シューマンファンには溜飲の下がる言葉だ。

私事にわたるが、ベートーヴェン、シューベルト、モーツァルト、シベリウス、マーラー…と聴き進む中で、シューマンはどうしても克服できない「苦手科目」だった。その世界がどこかしら異質で、感情移入することができなかった。それには個人的な理由もある。サークルの友人にシューマンマニアがおり、口を開くとシューマンを引き合いに出し、蘊蓄を語る。他のクラシックの作曲家はろくすっぽ聴かないくせに、シューマンのことは伝記や演奏を含めて何でも知っている。そのいかにも斜に構えた口吻が私はたまらなく嫌だった。やがて彼は卒業後、私の前から姿を消し、しばらく音信不通になっていた。私のかつてのシューマン・アレルギーには、この男も一役買っていると思うが、彼が『シューマンの指』の主人公、長嶺修人にそっくりなのだ。私はその後、芸術大学に就職したのをきっかけにリートからシューマンの世界に深く入って行った。それは何かが欠落した、歪んだ世界ではあったが、その喪失感は私に、自分の中にいるもう一人の自分に気づかせてくれた。そう思うと、シューマンの音楽は至る所で鳴っていた。今ではシューマンがなくてはならない生活の一部のようになっている。そうした音楽遍歴からいっても、やはりシューマンを聴く人間とそうでない人間には大きな相違があるように思えてならない。

小説のクライマックスは、修人がひとり深夜の高校の音楽室で「幻想曲　作品17」を演奏するシーンである。「私」は偶然、これを耳にする。幻想と情熱の織り合わされた第1楽章、そして行進曲風のリズミカルな第2楽章と進み、あの静謐で、天国的な、疑いなくシューマンが作り上げた最も美しい音楽である第3楽章が奏でられているさなか、闇を引き裂く叫び声があがる。深夜のプールで殺人事件が起こったのである。こうして指の謎と合わせて謎説きががぜん面白くなり、しばしば本書の宣伝文句としても使われているようにミステリー小説としても楽しめる。その先は、言わぬが花であろう。

さらに本書は、ドイツロマン派のすぐれた読み手でもあり、『ノヴァーリスの引用』という先著がある奥泉氏の、ロマン派文学への信仰告白でもある。冒頭と結末で手紙が重要な役割を果たし、ハイネやアイヒェンドルフの詩が引用され、また大半がＦ・シュレーゲルの「アテーネウム断片」をまねた断章形式で書かれていることは、本書がロマン派文学をモデルにしている証左であろう。ただし最後には思いもつかないような、どんでん返しがあり、そのすべてを破壊しているのだが…。この結末については、賛否両論だろう。正直にいえば私は少し失望した。しかし、この構造的破綻すらも、シューマンの悲劇的最期を文学的に表現したと解釈するならば、本書の意図は徹頭徹尾遂行されたことになる。奥泉氏はこの結末によって、作品全体をシューマン的狂気の中で処理しようとしたのかもしれない。

最後になるが、本稿を書きあぐね、締め切りも過ぎて事務局からの催促メールが気になり始めていた先日、例のシューマンマニアの友人から久しぶりに小包が届いた。中には竹村浄子の演奏するシューマンのＣＤが入っていた。早速視聴して、私は涙を抑えることができなかった。特に「幻想曲」の第三楽章は奇跡的な演奏だった。これを聴きながら私は何度あの小説のシーンを読み直したことだろう。添えられた手紙にはこう書かれていた。「しばらくご無沙汰しています。先日竹村さんのリサイタルに行ってきました。あんまりすばらしい演奏だったので、この感動をきみと分かち合いたくてＣＤを送ります。ただしお送りした演奏より現在は遥かに進化していましたよ。ここにたどりつくまで9年間の沈黙と修練を要したそうです。年末にもシューマンの別のコンサートを開くようですから、久しぶりに一緒に聴きに行きませんか。Ｍ・Ｎ」

しかし、もう何年も会っていない彼からこの時期に小包が届くとは、何という偶然だろう。まさか私自身が小説の迷宮に足を踏み入れたのではないだろうか。奴のことだからまた何か手の込んだ細工を画策しているかもしれない。しかし、とにかくコンサートには出かけよう。これだけのシューマンの演奏はめったに聴けるものではないのだから。もしかすると彼は会場に姿を現さず、自分の席に、蝋でできた指だけが置いてあるかもしれないが…。
